Tooth decay which is also known as dental caries in children is one of the most common health complaints yet preventable. Even if your child already has signs of some tooth decay, you may actually be able to reverse it. The incidence is declining in societies where water is fluorinated or where toothpaste containing fluoride is used. The best time to prevent tooth decay in your child is when they get their first tooth.
It is common in children and young adults, and rates have been found out that there is a increase of percentage of sugars in the diet and is with poor dental hygiene. The problem of tooth decay is caused by sticky deposits colorless film of bacteria, sugars, and mucin that forms on teeth and causes tooth decay called plaque that collect, around the gum line, the edges of fillings and the grooved surfaces of the teeth.
The plaque is made up of food debris, saliva and the bacteria that are normally present in the mouth and convert food into acids. If plaque is allowed to collect over time it will harden and turn into a substance called tartar. Both tartar and plaque contain acids which, over time, can dissolve away the protective, hard enamel coating of the tooth, and create holes, or cavities.
Most cavities form over a period of months, or even years. They are usually painless, but they can grow very large, and damage the much softer internal structures of the tooth such as the dentin which is the middle layer of a tooth, which makes up most of the tooth’s mass and the pulp, a soft part of which it is found at the innermost layer of a tooth that contains its blood vessels and nerves. If they remain untreated, they can kill the nerve and blood vessels of the tooth, and ultimately the tooth itself. Eating a diet rich in sugar and starch increases the risk of tooth decay, and sticky foods can be a particular problem because they are more likely to remain on the surface of the teeth.
In order to cut sweet consumption make sweets and sugars an occasional treat in your house. The number of snacks and meals should be limited. Give your child plenty of water to drink. Water increases saliva production in the mouth which helps to wash away the sugars left on the teeth after eating. Water with fluoride in it will also help to protect your child’s teeth from acid production. Take your child to the dentist on a regular basis. Make sure that once your child has around 4-6 teeth, that you take him for his first dental checkup. This will help your child get used to going to the dentist on a regular basis.
